aquarium

I sold this aquarium in 2010. I doubt that I will get another one but I leave this page here to remind me what I liked and didn't like about owning and caring for a salt water tank. It was nice to look at but I got bored of it and it take a lot of work to keep it healthy and looking good.

The tank is an all glass 120 gallon (48in x 24in x 24in) with dual overflows. Total system volume is about 150 gallons with the sump and refugium included. We run a Hamilton Belize Sun fixture with 2x 250 watt Phoenix 14k Metal Halides and 2x 54 watt T5 HO for a total of 608 watts. The T5 bulbs are a Giesemann 15k and a Hamilton 03 Actinic. We use a Corallife Super Skimmer 220G with a Danner Magdrive 7 with Fractionating Impeller for protein skimming in the My Reef Creations 36" reef sump with Refugium. A Danner Magdrive 18 is used for the return pump. Hydor Koralia 4, 3 and 2 are used for additional flow. Four Coralife 1 watt blue LEDs are used for nighttime illumination. A Neptune Systems Aquacontroller Jr controls the tank. The Koralia 4 and 3 are on alternating timers via the Aquacontroller to create a wavemaker.

We use the Berlin Method for filtration. There is 80 pounds of Fiji Pink Live Sand and about 200 pounds of Live Rock between the main tank and the refugium. The refugium also has a 4" deep sand bed made from Miracle Mud. We have many species of Macroalgae planted in the refugium. The refugium uses a 24" 48 watt T5 HO fixture with 1 10,000k and 1 6,700k bulb. It is on a reverse photoperiod from the tank.

I do about a 25% monthly water change and replace the Kent Reef Carbon that I have in a filter bag over the return pump inlet. Both drains empty into one 8" filter sock that is replaced about twice a week and the skimmer is cleaned as needed. I use Salifert pH, KH (Alkalinity), No3 (Nitrate) and Ca (Calcium) tests weekly to monitor water quality and I use Seachem buffers when needed. My Nitrate levels stay around 5 ppm now that the tank has stabalized.

These pictures were taken when the tank was about 3 months old (July 2009). We had a 75 gallon tank for about a year before we switched to this one. You can see the old 75 gallon here.

Water Parameters:

Specific Gravity: 1.025
pH: 8.1 - 8.4
Alkalinity: 8.6 - 9.9 dKH (2.86 - 3.43 meq/L)
Calcium: 380 - 420 ppm
Temp: 79 - 82º F

Local Fish Store:

We use Pets Unlimited almost exclusively. We usually drive past 4 other stores on the way to Pets Unlimited. No other store in the North Atlanta area has better service, healthier livestock or a more knowledgeable staff. They are also open 7 days a week and they carry excellent dog and cat supplies too.
